All pottery at Prairie Springs is made by hand. Nancy is responsible for designing, throwing and decorating all of the pottery. She makes the majority of the pieces on the potter's wheel. A full line of serving pieces, dinnerware, and collectibles are available. Most pieces are decorated by hand with early Americana, floral and animal designs using lead-free glazes and stains. Each piece is kiln fired to "stoneware" which fuses the designs into the off-white base glaze. This technique is similar to one used to produce the tin-glazed ware made in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries.
All of our glazes are mixed from formulas that we have developed over the years. John is responsible for all glaze mixing and base glazing of the wares. He does the majority of the slab work - making Santa's, birdbaths, tiles etc.
Stoneware collectible Santa's are unique to Prairie Springs. Each year a new Santa is designed and hand-sculpted by Nancy. An old fashioned press mold is then made from the original Santa. Each Santa is hand-pressed, individually finished and hand glazed. The Santas are available for your home in limited edition. Each piece is signed, numbered and dated.
Prairie Springs Pottery is food, microwave, dishwasher and oven safe. We use only lead free glazes. Our pottery is not flame or burner proof and cannot be used on the range top.
All pottery pieces are available in each of our designs. Since all of our pottery is hand-crafted there will be slight variations in color, size and decorations making each piece unique.
